Instructions for fixing loosened Ivanko pro style dumbbells, barbells & EZ Curl Bars
Tools that are needed:
1) A 3/8" allen socket
2) A long breaker bar (1/2" drive)
3) A pipe wrench
4) A 1/4" thick piece of leather (to protect bar)
Note: It's important to follow these instructions below so that the dumbbells will hold-up
under heavy usage.
- Loosen the allen bolt with the breaker bar and the 3/8" socket.
Be sure to have someone else holding the handle while you
try to loosen the allen bolt. It is important to wrap the
handle with a piece of leather to help protect the knurling.
Use a large pipe wrench wrapped around the leatheallen bolt does not loosen, the Locktite
will need to be heated up. This is done by using a small torch or cigarette lighter
to heat the allen bolt. Directing the flame on the outside of the bolt will heat it and melt
the Locktite making it easy to remove the allen bolt.
The heating of the allen bolt may need to be done a couple of times until you heat the allen bolt
enough to break it free from the Locktite. Eventually, the bolt will be free of locktite and easily turn.
- Once the allen bolt is out, remove the plates. Soak the handles and allen bolts in a degreaser
or paint thinner.
- Remove the allen bolts and allow to dry completely.
- Press the weight identification numbers into the recessed area.
- Remove the dumbbell handles and use an air hose to blow out any remaining foreign matter or dirt that may be
in the threads. Let them dry out thoroughly.
- Use #2 Locktite brand (the blue color, runs about $70.00 per large bottle).
DO NOT USE SUBSTITUTES. THEY WILL NOT WORK!
- Apply the #2 Locktite into the threads and tighten the allen bolt. You
can use an compressed air gun, but the final tightening has to be done
with a torque wrench. Set your torque wrench at 125 ft. pounds.
Use the breaker bar for the other end of the handle to hold it and torque the other side.
Do not let the Locktite set up dry without completing the job. Once you start, you must finish or
the Locktite will set-up dry and you will be back to square one. Do not delay assembly, you must
work quickly.
It is very important that the instructions above be followed "to the letter",
otherwise the dumbbells will continue to loosen up.
Ivanko OB 20KG Series Olympic Bar
The OB-20KG bar contains 15 different elements for the strength and performance of the bar. Composition of elements in the OB-20KG bar are aerospace certified. Straightness tolerance is .005 per ft to .010 per ft. and special straightness tolerance is certified at .002 per ft. Steel is made in full mill runs.
| PURITY OF OB-20 BAR STEEL: | The bar steel is sonic tested for internal flaws, inclusions and internal cracks.
The bar is mag tested for external flaws and cracks not visible to the human eye and is X-ray tested as a back up check. |
All IVANKO American-made OB-20KG Olympic bars are hand fitted, calibrated and weighed for accuracy. The steel is treated with black oxide solution which is cooked and certified not to exceed 400 degrees Fahrenheit. The knurling is rolled in so as not to add any stress points to the bar.
The exact content of the bars is classified secret and is not available to the general public.
Ivanko Black Oxide Bars Care and Maintenance Instructions
Black Oxide can begin to rust if it happens to get dirty and or wet. Also, the sleeves will need to be lubricated in order to prevent them from freezing up. If you perform some very basic maintenance, you will retain the black luster of your Ivanko bars and the sleeves will continue to work fine.
- Use a soft toothbrush to clean the dirt out of the bar knurling. If you can use an air hose to get all the oil and dirt out of the knurling, that would be ideal.
- Once the bar is clean, apply a generous amount of "3-in-1" type oil to the inside bushing area where the sleeve meets the bar on both sleeves. Work the oil into the bushing and wipe clean afterwards. Then apply a generous amount of oil to the end of the bar, through the hole in the chrome cap. Tip the bar up so the oil runs down the end of the bar and into the inside bushing. Let the bar stand, slanted, for about 2-3 hours. Wipe off the excess oil and do the other end the same way.
- Apply a thin oil coat of oil to the rest of the bar and let the bar soak overnight.
- The following morning, wipe the bar clean and remove any excess oil so that the bar is dry.
If you do this to the bar about every 30 days your Ivanko bars will look good and perform
well.
